Someone who uses Fruits and Greens several times on a weekly basis has 4 times less change of getting "Alzheimer" , compared to those who don't use Fruits and Greens at all during the week.

This statement was published in the American Journal of Medicine (september 2006)
Only the amount of Polyphenols seemed relevant.
The amount of vit. C, E, and carbohydrate was not important.

For ten years Co-workers of the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, made a detailed list of all new cases of Alzheimer amongst 1800 elder Japanese citizens of the American city Seattle.

The citizens of Hawaii and Hiroshima were also involved in this research program.

In the period 1992-1994 the Japanese citizens of Seattle were instructed to fill in a food inquiry. They also had to indicate their food and drink pattern trough the use of pictures.

In the years after, 81 Japanese of the Seattle group had Alzheimer disease.

After correcting the factors that could speed up the process, like smoking, education, physical activity, and use of fats, it became clear that Fruit and Greens could offer a protection of 76%.

Drinking fruit juice once or twice a week didn’t seem very effective.
The risk of Alzheimer was only reduced by 16%.

These effects were very clear with people who had the genetic variant of apolipoproteïn E4. These people have a higher risk of getting Alzheimer.

When one has Alzheimer, the protein beta-amyloïd in the brain has been oxidized. Hydrogen oxide could be the malefactor.

Recently a major research has been done on the benefits of the antioxidant vitamin E. No real effect was shown on Alzheimer. They were a little surprised because fruits and vegetables which contain large amounts of Vitamin E do have positive effects.

Then the researchers focused on the polyphenols in particular. These can get pass the blood-brain barrier to neutralize the hydrogen peroxide.

Polyphenols are close under the shell of Fruits and Greens.
With pressed fruit juice there are a lot of Polyphenols in the glass.

That’s why industrial fabricated juice can be a high source of these nutrients.

Antioxidant:
An enzyme or other organic molecule that reduces the rate of particular oxidation reactions and can counteract the damaging effects of oxygen in tissues. Although the term technically applies to molecules reacting with oxygen, it is often applied to molecules that provide protection from any free radical (i.e., a molecule with an unpaired electron).
Polyphenols:
are a group of chemical substances found in plants. Research indicates that the flavonoids, a class of polyphenols, has antioxidant characteristics with potential health benefits that may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Polyphenols are potent antioxidant compounds that have demonstrated greater antioxidant protection than vitamins C and E. Green tea may also increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Green tea polyphenols may inhibit cancer by blocking the formation of cancer-causing compounds and suppressing the activation of carcinogens. The major polyphenols in green tea are flavonoids: catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and proanthocyanidins.

Though both green tea and black tea are derived from the same plant (Camellia sinensis), they contain different antioxidants.



Inflammation linked to diseases from Alzheimer’s to cancer                        ...and the list just keeps swelling.


Inflammation isn’t pretty. And it often hurts.

But the tell-tale swelling and ache, the redness and heat are signs that our bodies are fighting back against microbial invaders that might otherwise harm or kill us. Inflammation is our first line of defense and some times, it now seems, our worst enemy.

In multiple sclerosis, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, the body turns upon itself with often catastrophic results. But the danger is not limited to these classic inflammatory diseases. Increasingly, scientists are linking inflammation to an expanding list of disparate and sometimes surprising diseases, from Alzheimer’s, autism and asthma to cirrhosis, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

We’re converging toward what I believe may eventually be a unifying hypothesis of human disease,” said Michael Karin, a professor of pharmacology and molecular biologist at UCSD. “I think we will find that inflammation and infection will account for 90 percent of human misery.”

The evidence is compelling. For example, the Women’s Health Study, a landmark research program involving almost 28,000 women, has found that women with the highest measures of inflammation in their blood face a seven-fold increased risk of heart attack or stroke. 

Sufferers of inflammatory bowel disease have a five-to seven-fold higher incidence of developing colon cancer. And studies have shown that people who take anti-inflammatory drugs seem to get Alzheimer’s disease later in life than those who do not.

Inflammation may be driving a lot of what we’re seeing, in a lot of different diseases. It may be that the things that cause these diseases are related to inflammation,” said Dr. Barrett Rollins, chief science officer at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

But that being said, there are still a lot of things we need to learn.”


  • Basic biology
The basics, though, are pretty well-known. Inflammation is the body’s biggest weapon, the biological equivalent of shock and awe. It is meant to overwhelm and destroy an en emy—regardless of collateral damage —in an effort to secure quick and total victory. The fundamental process is the same wheth er you’re sneezed upon by someone with a cold, inhale a snoutful of allergenic pollen or cut your finger.

For illustration purposes, let’s say the last happens, triggering a cascade of events known collectively as innate immunity.

Sentries called mast cells in the injured finger (they’re stationed everywhere) detect the presence of pathogens and sound the alarm, secreting proteins called cytokines to summon help and histamines to make near by capillaries suddenly porous. The leaky blood vessels flood the wounded area with plasma, producing swelling and discomfort, but also isolating pathogens from the rest of the body and slowing their spread.

Soon, the body’s immunological warriors, a class of white blood cells called phagocytes, arrive. They are meat-eaters. Their job is to consume and digest foreign material, including dead and dying cells. As the phagocytes work, they secrete more cytokines, summoning more reinforcements and provoking greater and sharper symptoms of inflammation. Their fight will rage on until there is nothing left to kill or eat.

Under normal circumstances, said Geert Schmid-Schoenbein, a UCSD professor of bioengineering, “once the infection is cleared up, inflammation goes away.”
